Food, nutrition and health converge in the field of dietetics.
Consequently NDVDA members have a unique perspective of how to advance the health of individuals through
improved nutrition public policy.
Nutrition Public Policy Team
Your nutrition public policy team for the 2007-2008 year is as follows:
State Legislation and Public Policy-Jackie Darling, RD

Goals for Nutrition Public Policy
For the current year, there are several initiatives identified to Influence the food,
nutrition and health policy initiatives of key audiences.
a. We will have new contacts initiated by legislators and non-dietetic health care policy developers for
input from dietetics professionals on key policy initiatives.
b. Establish personal contacts with the state and federal senators and representatives (see below).
c. Support VDA’s public policy initiatives. Have as many NDVDA representatives attend VDA’s Legislative
session and ADA’s Public Policy Workshop.
d. Support VDA’s PAC when it is available.
Ambassador Program
In trying to get information to our state legislators and have their questions answered; VDA is setting up personal
contacts or ambassadors for each of our state delegates and senators. This person would be a constituent and establish
a personal relationship with their legislator, answering the legislator’s questions and/or providing timely information
for VDA. If you are interested in getting involved contact your district president.
Know Your Delegate and Senator
To contact your delegate and/or senator please go to the following Web page for the Virginia General Assembly.
There is a section to locate your state representative and check status of pieces of legislation. For status of the
legislation that VDA has identified as having a nutrition component or affecting current nutrition policy or roles of dietitian,
please refer to VDA’s Web site.
ADA’s Public Policy Workshop
ADA’s Public Policy Workshop is the Association’s premier advocacy and grassroots training meeting.
The workshop is designed to provide attendees with the opportunity to visit Capitol Hill and discuss ADA’s priority
issues with their Representatives and Senators. This year’s workshop will be held February 4-6, 2008 in Washington, D.C.
If you are interested in attending or have any questions, please contact Cindy MacIntyre.
2008 VDA Legislative Day
On January 28, 2008, VDA will hold their annual Legislative Day in Richmond, VA.
Come and gather with other nutrition professionals to learn about policy priorities for this
upcoming year.
This is a one day event designed to educate Dietitian’s on the legislative process their role in advocacy with
respect to impacting health care policy. If you are interested in attending or have any questions, please contact
Cindy MacIntyre or Amy Crisp.
Getting Involved-We need you.
We cannot do this alone. We need your ideas, resources, contacts, and energies.
In short we need your passion. The following is from the Virginia’s General Assembly
“Get Involved. Find out who your representatives are and what they stand for, read the newspaper,
volunteer in your community, be aware of issues and how they affect you; realize that you can initiate
change and remember that every vote counts. Your vote and your voice can always make a difference!“

Please do not hesitate to contact anyone of us with your thoughts and ideas.
Remember if dietetics is your profession then nutrition public policy is your passion.
